The IVA Register Explained

12 Aug 2026

Finding out that your IVA will be listed on a public register can feel worrying at first. You might wonder whether your employer will find it, if a landlord could check it, or whether friends and family will come across it online.

The good news is, the reality is often much less concerning than many people expect.

In this guide, we’ll explain what the IVA Register is, what information it contains, who can access it, how long your details stay on the register and what happens once your IVA ends.

What Is the IVA Register?

The IVA Register is part of the Individual Insolvency Register, which is maintained by the Insolvency Service.

It’s an official public record that contains details of people who are currently subject to certain formal insolvency solutions, including:

The register exists to provide transparency around formal insolvency proceedings. It allows creditors, lenders and other relevant organisations to confirm whether someone is currently in a legally recognised insolvency arrangement.

Although it’s often referred to as the IVA Register, your IVA information actually appears within the wider Individual Insolvency Register.

What Information Does the IVA Register Show?

Although your IVA is listed on the register, it doesn’t display a detailed breakdown of your finances. Instead, it contains a limited amount of information about your insolvency arrangement.

Depending on your circumstances, the register may display:

  • Your full name
  • Your address
  • Your date of birth (shown in a limited format)
  • The date your IVA began
  • The status of your IVA
  • The name and contact details of your IVA supervisor

It doesn’t include details such as:

  • How much debt you owe
  • Your income
  • Your monthly IVA payment
  • Your bank account details
  • A breakdown of your creditors

Many people assume the register contains a complete picture of their finances, but that’s not the case.

Is the IVA Register Public?

Yes. The Individual Insolvency Register is publicly accessible.

However, that doesn’t mean your IVA is widely advertised or that people will come across it by accident.

Someone would need to know about the register, visit the Insolvency Service website and actively search for your details. It’s not something that appears in internet search results when someone searches your name, and most people never use the register unless they have a specific reason to do so.

While it can feel unsettling to know your IVA is listed, the practical impact is often much smaller than many people imagine.

Who Can See the IVA Register?

Because it’s a public register, anyone can search it. That said, different people may have different reasons for accessing it.

Can employers see my IVA?

In most cases, employers don’t routinely search the Individual Insolvency Register.

Some professions, particularly those involving financial regulation, legal responsibilities or positions of trust, may require employees to disclose an IVA or may carry out insolvency checks as part of their recruitment process.

For many jobs, however, an employer is unlikely to search the register unless there’s a specific reason to do so.

If you’re unsure whether an IVA could affect your employment, it’s worth checking your employment contract or speaking confidentially with your HR department if appropriate.

Can landlords see my IVA?

A landlord could search the register, but it’s not usually the first place they’ll look.

When assessing a tenancy application, landlords are more likely to rely on:

  • Credit reference checks
  • Affordability assessments
  • Employment verification
  • References from previous landlords

An IVA may still affect your ability to pass certain referencing checks, but that’s generally linked to your credit history rather than the register itself.

If you’re applying to rent while in an IVA, being open with a landlord where appropriate and demonstrating that your finances are being managed can sometimes help.

Can family or friends see my IVA?

Technically, yes. But, it’s uncommon unless someone deliberately searches the register using your details. Most people aren’t aware the register exists, and it’s not something they’re likely to check without a specific reason.

How Long Do You Stay on the IVA Register?

One of the most common questions people ask is “How long will I be on the register?”

In most cases, your details remain on the Individual Insolvency Register for the duration of your IVA.

Once your IVA has been successfully completed or otherwise comes to an end, your record is usually removed within around three months.

This often causes confusion because people assume removal from the register also removes the IVA from their credit file.

The two are separate.

Does an IVA Stay on Your Credit File After It’s Removed From the Register?

Yes. Even after your details have been removed from the Individual Insolvency Register, your IVA will usually remain on your credit report for six years from the date it was approved.

For example:

If your IVA lasts five years, it will normally remain on your credit file for around one additional year after completion.

If your IVA lasts six years, it may disappear from your credit file shortly after it’s completed.

Although your credit score can take time to recover, successfully completing your IVA is an important milestone that allows you to begin rebuilding your financial future.

Can an IVA Be Removed From the Register Early?

In most situations, no. Your IVA remains on the register while it’s active because it’s a formal legal debt solution.

Removing someone early would generally only happen if the IVA had been entered onto the register incorrectly or there were exceptional administrative circumstances requiring the record to be amended.

If you believe there’s an error with your information, you should speak to your IVA supervisor as soon as possible.

Should You Be Worried About Being on the IVA Register?

It’s completely understandable to feel anxious about your details appearing on a public register.

Many people worry that everyone around them will somehow find out about their IVA. In practice, that’s rarely how it works.

The Individual Insolvency Register exists because IVAs are formal legal agreements. It’s designed to provide transparency for insolvency proceedings rather than expose people’s financial circumstances to the public.

For most people, day-to-day life continues exactly as normal. Friends, neighbours and colleagues are unlikely to know you’re on the register unless you choose to tell them or they actively search for your details.

While entering an IVA is a significant financial decision, it’s also a positive step towards dealing with unmanageable debt. Completing the arrangement can give you the opportunity to move forward with greater financial stability and peace of mind.
