Struggling To Cope With Energy Bill Debt?

When finances are stretched, energy bills can quickly become one of the most difficult household costs to manage. Whether it’s gas, electricity, or a dual-fuel account, arrears can build until they feel overwhelming.

Suppliers are regulated and must follow clear rules before taking stronger action, but that doesn’t prevent the worry caused by warning letters, reminders, or the threat of a prepayment meter. If you’ve already started receiving these notices, now is the time to explore your options.

At PennyPlan, we provide calm, confidential support to help you understand your situation and take steps toward a practical, sustainable solution.

Reasons To Choose PennyPlan

How To Manage Energy Bill Debt

Energy arrears often build gradually a missed payment here and there, or higher usage during colder months. Add rising prices into the mix, and it’s easy for debt to spiral. Once arrears build up, suppliers may insist on repayment plans or fit a prepayment meter, which can make budgeting even harder.

The good news is that energy bill debt can usually be included in formal debt solutions such as Debt Management Plan (DMP), Individual Voluntary Arrangement(IVA), or Debt Relief Order (DRO), While you’ll still need to pay your ongoing energy usage, these solutions can make the arrears more manageable by reducing monthly payments, freezing interest, or in some cases writing off unaffordable debt altogether.

Energy Bill Debt Repayment Options

Finding the right repayment method depends on your circumstances, which is why we take the time to understand your situation before suggesting a path forward.

IVA

Individual Voluntary Arrangement

An IVA combines multiple debts into one affordable monthly payment plan. Energy arrears can be included, and a portion of the debt may be written off at the end of the arrangement.

DMP

Debt Management Plan

A flexible repayment plan where arrears are included alongside your other unsecured debts. Ongoing usage is paid separately, but past debt becomes easier to manage.

DRO

Debt Relief Order

Designed for people with low income and few assets, a DRO can see your energy bill arrears written off after 12 months with no repayments during that time, if you qualify..

Get Help With Energy Bill Arrears Today

Energy is a household essential, so when debt begins to mount, it can have a knock-on effect on your wellbeing and other financial commitments. Acting early gives you more control and more options.

At PennyPlan, our advice is free, confidential, and focused on what works best for you. Whether you’re worried about arrears, disconnection, or just want to understand your choices, we’re here to help. Let’s work through it together, speak to our team today.

What Happens If You Don’t Pay Your Energy Bill?

If you continue to miss payments, your supplier will begin by sending reminders and final notices. Over time, the situation can escalate. Additional fees may be added to your account, and if arrears remain unpaid the debt could be passed to a collection agency. Some suppliers will apply to install a prepayment meter, which can make energy costs harder to manage if you’re already struggling.

If the debt is left unresolved, your supplier may take legal action. This could result in a County Court Judgment (CCJ). A CCJ has a serious impact on your credit score and your ability to access credit, rent a property, or pass certain background checks.

In the most serious cases, energy supply can be disconnected. This is usually considered a last resort and suppliers must follow Ofgem’s rules, particularly where vulnerable households are concerned. It is still a possibility if arrears are ignored.

I was hesitant in applying for an IVA, But my mind was put at ease on the first call. The whole process was explained to me with complete care and understanding and I didn’t feel judged at all. Since being accepted for the IVA my mental health has improved so much and I now don’t worry about how I am going to put food on the table each week.

Energy Bill Debt FAQs

Yes, but only as a last resort. Suppliers must follow strict rules and consider repayment options first, particularly if you’re vulnerable.

Yes. Gas and electricity debts are unsecured arrears and can usually be included in a DMP, IVA, or DRO.

It can. If arrears are passed to a debt collector or a CCJ is issued, this will appear on your credit file and could affect future applications.

Many suppliers offer payment plans, grants, or hardship funds. But if arrears are already unmanageable, a regulated debt solution may be a better long-term fix.

If energy bills are just one part of a wider debt problem, we can help you explore formal solutions that deal with everything together in one plan.
