How does the National Debtline work?
When you contact National Debtline, they’ll start by assessing your financial situation, looking at income, outgoings, and debts. They then provide tailored advice on what steps you can take, from negotiating with creditors to setting up formal debt solutions.
They also provide resources such as template letters, fact sheets, and online tools to help you manage debts directly. Their advice is impartial, and they don’t charge for their service.
Does the National Debtline affect credit score or rating?
The National Debtline itself does not affect your credit score. Speaking to them for advice or support is private and has no impact on your credit file.
However, the debt solution you choose after getting advice can affect your rating:
- Informal arrangements with creditors may show as reduced payments.
- Debt Relief Orders (DROs) and Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) stay on your credit file for six years.
- Bankruptcy has the most significant impact on credit history.
It’s the debt solution, not the National Debtline charity, that influences your credit record.
What is the National Debtline?
National Debtline is a national charity-run service designed to give people free, confidential help with debt. Their aim is to empower individuals to take control of their finances by explaining their rights and the full range of debt solutions available in the UK.
They are not a lender and do not charge for advice. Instead, their role is to support people in making informed decisions about managing debt.
Does National Debtline charge a fee?
No. National Debtline is a free service. They do not charge for advice or for access to their online tools and resources.
Some formal debt solutions, such as IVAs or bankruptcy, involve fees, but these are linked to the insolvency process itself, not National Debtline.
